YAHOO DATA BREACH SETTLEMENT

If you operated a Yahoo account any time between 2012 and 2016, you can now take part in a class action settlement to compensate you for losses. Over several years, hackers were able to gain access to Yahoo user accounts, and steal private emails, calendars and contacts in at least three separate attacks.  Additionally, any user who had received a data breach alert or had a Yahoo account at any time between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2016, being the citizen of the United States or Israel, will be entitled to compensation.

Yahoo’s offer

Yahoo is setting up a $117.5 million fund to pay up to $358 or valued services to anyone who has hacked their accounts in the above-mentioned period of time. The breaches affected 3 billion Yahoo users who were exposed over the three-year period to their names, email accounts, and passwords. It is also probable that some individuals could claim up to $25,000 in damages if they can show evidence of out-of-pocket losses or time lost due to data breaches. “If you spent time or money to address fraud or identity theft that you believe was caused by the data breaches, or to protect yourself from future harm, then you may make a claim for reimbursement,” the Yahoo settlement site notes. “Each individual or small business user claim for out-of-pocket costs may not exceed $25,000.”

The total amount of payouts will depend on how many people lodge lawsuits with Yahoo, and if two California courts hear the cases accept the settlement. And anyone who is waiting for a check in their mailbox must be cautious. Claimants are required to file a claim until July 20, 2020, and any payouts are likely to be at least a year away

How to submit a claim?

As a basic account holder a paid user and a small business user, you can make file a claim. Citizens of Israel must apply a separate form of statement. The website of the settlement has different forms for each claim category. Users can also contact Yahoo through email at info@yahoodatabreachsettlement.com or call on 1-844-702-2788 to have a claim form mailed.

Claim for Credit Monitoring

When you make a credit monitoring request, you can receive services for at least two years, but up to four years may be extended depending on how many people use this choice as well. Credit monitoring involves tracking identity theft, compensation covering costs associated with fixing your credit and monitoring any wrongdoing on your credit reports on a daily basis.

Since many people already have similar free services through programs such as Credit Karma, or through their bank or credit card company, this is probably the least beneficial alternative.

What happens if a user does not submit a claim?

If a user does not take any action, once the settlement is approved, not only will the user will receive any compensation, whether he or she is part of the class, the user will also not be able to take any action on their own later onwards.
